Degree: Doctorate (Doutoramento)

Entry Requirements: Individuals in the following categories can apply for the program:
a) those having a Master degree, or its legal equivalent, in Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Engineering or similar;
b) those having a Licenciatura undergraduate degree, or its legal equivalent, in Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Engineering or similar, and a academic, professional, or scientific curriculum that is recognized by the competent governing body of the Universidade Aberta as adequate for the PhD
c) or, exceptionally, those having an oustanding academic, professional, and scientific curriculum that is recognized by the competent governing body of the Universidade Aberta as adequate for the PhD.


Language of Instruction: Portuguese and English.

Teaching Mode: It is a distance learning teaching programme  taught in a virtual class using an e-learning platform and adopting the Universidade Aberta pedagogic model.

Goals / Employment:

The graduate from this programme should be able to use state of the art mathematical techniques in order to model, simulate, or analyse complex processes in the scientific or professional area of his/her interest.

He/She should acquire a solid background in mathematical or statistical modelling, both in the theoretical aspects as well as in the applied and numerical ones. A doctor in Applied Mathematical and Modelling should be able to transfer that knowledge into his/her professional activities and contribute to the technological development of his/her company.

He/she will also be able to proceed teaching and research activities  in Mathematical and Statistical modelling in institutions oh igher Education and Research Centers.

Professional opportunities for graduates are manifold: teaching at the Secondary and Higher Education levels; R&D departments of industrial and service companies; academic laboratories and research centers.

Curricular Structure and Credits: This master course is divided into a first part corresponding to the course curriculum for postgraduate studies in Applied Mathematics and Modelling, and a second part, dedicated to preparing, performing and presenting and defending of a thesis. The course curriculum correspond to 60 credits, corresponding to 6 curricular units from the available ones at each edition and has one year duration. Te thesis has a two year duration and corresponds to 120 credits.
