Course Description:
The study of human geography in Portugal has, as its starting point, a reflection on the significance of a territory’s geographical position. Decisive factors of human occupation will be analyzed, such as the constraints of physical atmosphere and those that evolve from the historic evolution of economic structures. The course will discuss economic activities that determine the organization of space (such as mining, agriculture and fisheries). The course will promote a critical reflection about the mechanisms of demographic evolution, the process of industrialization, the transformations in urban agglomerations and the evolution of Portugal’s relations with the outside world.

Competences:
• Analysing critically the implications of physical constraints in human activities;
• Identifying and evaluating the repercussions of historic events in the structure of the territory;
• Reflecting critically on the characteristics of the human occupation of the territory.

Contents:
1. The territory and its position: physical constraints and the historical evolution of economic foundations;
2. Population;
3. Primary, secondary and tertiary activities;
4. Urban agglomerations;
5. Structure of the territory and external relations.
