Course Description:
The aim of this course unit is to provide students of English with a course of study that will take them to an upper-intermediate/advanced level of linguistic competence. In addition to focusing on grammar points particularly relevant to this level of study, the course unit will give special emphasis to and oral reception skills over a range of thematic areas, using materials produced by native English speakers from all over the world. We will also begin to study grammatical and lexical structures used in the production of sophisticated written texts in English.


Competences:
The competences this course unit aims to develop are those that correspond to the levels B2/C1, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, including the following:
• Capacity to understand written and oral texts produced in English and to demonstrate this understanding through the realization of diverse communicational tasks;
• Capacity to summarize English-language texts, drawn from a range of non-specialized areas and revealing a high level of discursive complexity;
• Capacity to identify and to employ accurately a broad range of grammatical and lexical structures, adapting them to diverse discursive contexts.


Contents:
This course unit will give particular emphasis to the following grammatical aspects of the English language:
• Noun, relative and adverbial clauses;
• Infinitives and gerunds;
• Quantifiers;
• Modal verbs;
• Future forms;
• Hypothetical situations;
• Indirect discourse.

All of these aspects will be approached from familiar discursive contexts and through the realization of specific communicational tasks. The thematic areas in which these will be explored include the following:
• Significant events;
• Fame and celebrity;
• Solving mysteries and resolving problems;
• Relationships;
• The natural world.

Assessment:
Continuous assessment is mandatory: 2 digital written documents (e-folios) during the semester (40%) and a presence-based final exam (p-folio) in the end of the semester (60%).


Comments:
Prerequisite for enrolment: successful completion of English IV or equivalent qualification.
