Course Description:
• Aquisição de conhecimentos genéricos e específicos sobre a sociedade e a cultura alemãs, nomeadamente o percurso histórico entre os séculos XVIII e XX, dentro das vertentes política, social e cultural, que nos ajude a ter uma noção clara do que é o espaço geográfico falante da língua alemã, as suas matizes culturais diversas e a sua marca de identidade no contexto actual europeu.
• Compreensão e aplicação operativa de conceitos teóricos e de conhecimentos adquiridos a determinadas ocorrências históricas e culturais.
• Leitura crítica de fontes documentais e críticas seleccionadas, e o seu manuseamento no sentido da reflexão analítica e autónoma sobre determinada temática ou fenómeno.
• Capacidade de recolha, selecção e interpretação de dados relevantes para a análise de fenómenos ou de temas históricos, sociais ou culturais.
• Capacidade de confrontação de pontos de vista diversos sobre os mesmos fenómenos históricos e culturais.
• Comparação, argumentação e comunicação na exposição teórico-prática de temas, conceitos, fenómenos histórico-culturais.


Competences:
• Generic and specific knowledge on the German culture and society, namely on the historical process between the 18th and the 19th centuries, so that a clear picture of what defines the German-speaking geographical space is given, with its cultural diversity and its identity in the contemporary European context.
• Understanding and aplying of theoretical concepts and of specific knowledge to historical and cultural phenomena.
• Critical reading and use of selected historical texts and documents on the autonomous and analytical reflection on certain subject-matter of historical events.
• Gathering, selecting and interpreting of relevant data for the analysis of specific historical, cultural and social phenomena or themes.
• Ability to cross, or to transfer, or to compare different viewpoints on the same subject-matter.
• Ability to compare,to argue and to communicate theoretically on themes, concepts, and historical and cultural phenomena.


Contents:
• Spaces: Nation, language and territory; Aufklärung and modernity; The formation of the public space; Romantic nature and national identity.
• Culture Concepts: Bildung and Erfahrung.
• Times: Germany between 1815 and 1848.

Assessment:
Continuous assessment is privileged: 2 or 3 digital written documents (e-folios) during the semester (40%) and a presence-based final exam (p-folio) in the end of the semester (60%). In due time, students can alternatively choose to perform one final presence-based exam (100%).


Comments:
Alfred Opitz's book presents quotations and documents written in German. This fact shall not be a problem, for the necessary support will be given, with translated materials for each given subject-matter, if required by the Student.
