Course Description:
This unit concerns the study of the evolution of the definitions of culture, specifically, of American Culture; the cultural and historical data inherent to the Puritan colonisation of American territory; the perceptions of Native Americans by white Americans and the cultural, historical and literary outcome of their contact;  the reality of the American South, and the evolution of African-Americans until the fifties.


Competences:
The students will display interdisciplinary knowledge of:
-the evolution of the definitions of culture, specifically, of American Culture;
-the cultural and historical data inherent to the Puritan colonisation of American territory;
-the perceptions of Native Americans by white Americans and the cultural, historical and literary outcome of their contact;
-the reality of the American South, and the evolution of African-Americans until the fifties.


Contents:
With reference to the themes listed in 'Competences' it is considered compulsory knowledge contents between page 37 and page 234 of the manual of the Sociedade e Cultura Norte-Americanas edited by Universidade Aberta.
For better understanding the issues being studied in this course unit, students are recommended to read the complementary texts also published by Universidade Aberta, as well as to use the audio-visual supports.


Bibliography:
That which is contained between page 37 and page 234 of the manual  Sociedade e Cultura Norte-Americanas, edited by Universidade Aberta (Nº 111). These contents are to be complemented by the contents of the volume of Textos Complementares which are relevant to the topics to be dealt with.

Assessment:
Continuous assessment is privileged: 2 or 3 digital written documents (e-folios) during the semester (40%) and a presence-based final exam (p-folio) in the end of the semester (60%). In due time, students can alternatively choose to perform one final presence-based exam (100%).
