Course Description:
This course unit deals with topics related with the goal(s) of Sociology of Art: underlying matters and theoretical sets of knowledge that, on the whole, provide a methodology for the Plastic Art History.
It studies the context in which this methodology arose, its targeted issues, theoretical limits, main theorists, as well as the relations between society and art, the system and artistic markets, the work of art and art spectators (receptivity).


Competences:
Communicating correctly and fluently in Portuguese;
Learning how to learn, using customized and theme-adjusted working methodologies;
The ability to understand what the Sociology of Art is;
The ability to recognize the theoretical origins of Sociology of Art;
Recognize the theoretical origins of Sociology of Art;
To relate the Sociology of Art with the Social History of Art and Sociological Aesthetics;
Understand the ideas of the main theorists and their operational models;
To know how to analyze art in a sociological way;
To verify that a work of art is a trans-individual production;
To verify that a work of art is a phenomenon and / or a social fact;
Recognize the relations between art and society in contemporary time;
Identify the main public of art in contemporary era;
Understand the dynamics of artistic markets of the 20th and 21st centuries.


Contents:
The history, sociology, and sociology of the arts.
Sociology of Art as a field of knowledge (object of study, methodology, interdisciplinarity, or issues concerning the sociology of plastic arts).
Relations between Art and Society(-ies).
Main theoreticians.
Art as a social phenomenum.
Artists and their costumers.
The artist's role in societies.
Art markets and audiences.

Assessment:
Continuous assessment is privileged: 2 or 3 digital written documents (e-folios) during the semester (40%) and a presence-based final exam (p-folio) in the end of the semester (60%). In due time, students can alternatively choose to perform one final presence-based exam (100%).


Comments:
Students are required to have access to a computer with Internet connection and an e-mail address as well as to have computer literacy from the users' perspective.
