Course Description:
The course unit program focuses on the following issues:
(I) the semantic structure of the sentence - meaning and referent;
(Ii) the specific aspects of the construction of reference (deixis and anaphora);
(Iii) aspectual and temporal values and modal values;
(Iv) the (syntactic-semantic) grammar phenomena typical of Portuguese;
(V) analysis of temporal adjuncts acting as event locators;
(Vi) the illocutionary pragmatics and the interactional analysis.


Competences:
General competences:
(i) distinguishing grammar relations;
(ii) mastering concepts of tense and aspect;
(iii) distinguishing the meaning of meaning;
(iv) analysing issues on Language use and Linguistic Pragmatics;
Specific competences:
(i) establishing relations among Lexicon, Syntax, Semantics and Pragmatics;
(ii) distinguishing the concepts of meaning and referent, referential and predicative expressions and defined and undefined expressions;
(iii) distinguishing different types of aspectual and modal values, recognizing the corresponding markers;
(iv) identifying different types of anaphoric reference;
(v) distinguishing and relating anaphoric reference and deixis references;
(vi) analysing illocutionary acts in different situational contexts.


Contents:
The course unit program focuses on the following issues:
(i) the distinction between linguistic competence and communication competence;
(ii) the distinction between Sentence/Statement and Text/Speech;
(iii) the relations among Lexicon, Syntax, Semantics and Pragmatics;
(iv) the contribution of the Lexicon: the verb as the main category of the sentence;
(v) the semantic structure of the sentence - meaning and referent;
(vi) the predication - semantic characterization of verbal predicates;
(vii) the aspectual and temporal values and modal values;
(viii) the (syntactic-semantic) grammar phenomenon typical of Portuguese;
(ix) the specific aspects of the construction of reference (deixis and anaphora);
(x) the grammar and pragmatics of some types of verbs (full verbs, auxiliary, copulative);
(xi) the verb and the language action dimension - the illocutionary theory;
(xii) the discursive functioning of illocutionary acts;
(xiii) illocutionary acts and discourse sequences.

Assessment:
Continuous assessment is privileged: 2 or 3 digital written documents (e-folios) during the semester (40%) and a presence-based final exam (p-folio) in the end of the semester (60%).
In due time, students can alternatively choose to perform one final presence-based exam (100%).


Comments:
To enroll in this course unit students are required to have successfully achieved Introduction to Linguistic Studies I and Introduction to Linguistic Studies II.
Students are required to have access to a computer with Internet broadband connection.
