Course Description:
This course unit studies normative tools and others, designed for integrating  the environmental component in the management of companies and organizations. On these tools is also included the  Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA).

 

Competences:

• Knowing and understanding specific theories of concepts, polices and principles of integrated environmental management.
• Explaining, comparing and applying various environmental management tools, including the life cycle analysis, ecodesign, eco-labels, environmental management systems, integrates systems of management, environmental auditing, environmental performance evaluation and understand it's applicably
• Studying and analysing legislation on Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).
• Understanding the whole process of environmental impact assessment and its limitations.
• Knowing how to process the involvement of different key stakeholders and public participation in EIA process.
• Knowing how to prepare the types of products that may result from an environmental impact assessment, namely: Scoping Proposals, Environmental Impact Studies (EIS), Environmental Compliance Reporting and Monitoring Reports.
• Studying and analysing legislation on Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA).
• Overall and integrating perspective of all these tools.

 



Contents:
This course unit discusses key policies, goals and priorities for sustainable management of different environmental management tools, highlighting, ecological design of products (ecodesign) and eco-labels, environmental management systems and integrated environmental systems, quality and safety, life cycle assessment, environmental audits, assessing the sustainability performance and reporting of organizations and other tools.
This course unit also provides the essential knowledge needed to study the environmental impact assessment, namely to understand how the whole process, procedures and methods, especially oriented towards the importance and application of this tool of environmental policy and decision support. It begins by discussing the fundamental concepts and principles of EIA, then presents the EIA system, referring to the EIA process, the main entities involved and the main products. It is given special emphasis to the importance of public participation throughout the process and how it should be matched. It also refers to the points that should be considered in EIA planning and management and develop different methods that can be applied in both the EIA scoping and identification of impacts, and in predicting impacts, impact assessment, comparison of alternatives and mitigation. Also the post-evaluation is developed (monitoring) along with some notions on Strategic Environmental Assessment.
So, this course provides an integrated view of all these tools within the management of companies and/or organizations.

Assessment:
Evaluation is made on individual basis and it involves the coexistence of two modes: continuous assessment (60%) and final evaluation (40%). Further information is detailed in the Learning Agreement of the course unit.
